Can people ride in the back of a truck in PA? ›

You can legally ride in the bed of a pickup truck in Pa. under a few conditions. Pennsylvania vehicle code allows for passengers to travel in the open bed of a pickup truck under two main conditions: the truck isn't going faster than 35 mph and the passenger isn't under the age of 18.

The law and the DMV have long made a distinction between vehicles used strictly for private passenger transportation purposes and those used strictly for commercial purposes. However, the state also recognized that some types of vehicles, such as pickup trucks, could be used for both types of transportation.

In Pennsylvania, the maximum vehicle width is 96 inches. For height, the maximum is 13 feet 6 inches. Maximum vehicle length for any single vehicle is 40 feet.

Passengers in open trucks. (a) General rule. --An open-bed pickup truck or open flatbed truck may not be driven at a speed of more than 35 miles per hour if any person is occupying the bed of the truck.

Don't Operate Your Truck with the Tailgate Down Unless You're Hauling a Bulky Load. Also, you cannot operate a truck with a bed with the tailgate down. Unless you're driving a bulky load (which has to be safely secured), you're breaking the law if you drive and don't close the tailgate.

There is no law that requires dog to be restrained while riding in a vehicle. But it is prohibited for a dog to ride in the open portion of that vehicle (whether it be in the truck bed or in a convertible) unless the dog is secured in some humane way that will prevent it from being thrown or jumping out.

Intrastate Operations - Intrastate operations occur when commercial vehicles transport goods or passengers from one point to another point within Pennsylvania. Vehicles primarily conducting intrastate operations are issued registration plates labeled as; “Bus,” “Limousine,” “Taxi,” or “Truck” at the bottom.

It depends on the trailer you are pulling. If the GCWR is 26,001 pounds or more, and the vehicle being towed has a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more you will need a Class A driver's license. If the trailer's GVWR is 10,000 pounds or less the vehicle can be operated with a Class B driver's license.

Pennsylvania. Front lift blocks are not allowed in the state, while rear lift blocks are limited to five inches.

How big of a truck can I drive without a CDL in Pennsylvania? ›

You are required to have a CDL if you operate or plan to operate any of the following commercial motor vehicles (CMVs): a) A combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

A tandem trailer combination which is considered an over-dimensional/overweight vehicle shall require a special hauling permit to travel on the Turnpike System. In tandem combinations, the heaviest trailer shall be towed next to the truck tractor.

You won't need to worry about legal restrictions on riding in the back of a pickup truck if you're in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia or Wyoming.
