In 2010 Layar was invited to participate at the yearly Google Zeitgeist event. This time it was in Phoenix Arizona. Especially for that event we created a prototype that used sensor fusion(GPS, compass, accelerometer & Computer Vision Technology) and XMPP to create a synced multi player environment. In this demo you see a portal open, spaceships flying out and the ability to destroy them by shooting lasers out of your phone. The uniqueness of this experience was that others through their own phone would see the exact same thing, including the lasers being fired. I remember that Larry Page and @will.I.am where pretty impressed by the demo when the experienced it. I also remember Rense VanderHoek and Ronald van der Lingen working through the night to get the demo finished in time.. haha. It was close but we made it. https://lnkd.in/djq8veCv

Another Layar story. One of the amazing chapters of Layar was actually how quickly it was built, launched and recognized on a global level. Below you see three images. The first is a screenshot from a slide deck that shows a mock-up of Layar we used to convince Dutch social network Hyves, that recently launched their POI API, to be a launching partner. On March 16th 2009 we got the green light from Yme Bosma to use their API to make our 1st layer. As Hyves was a big brand in The Netherlands, we could leverage their involvement to convince other partners to also become a launching layer with us. So we were able to quickly get ING, funda, Tempo-Team and ZEKUR to become PAYING launching layers. The whole development of the 1st release of Layer happened between March and June using Google App engine to be able to launch quickly. Whole development of the 1st version of Layar was around €35k payed for by our launching partners. The second image shows our Launch video from our Launch on June 16th 2009. The last picture is of the PAPER version of The New York Times July 12th 2009. So from the start of the development of Layar till being featured in the New York Times took exactly 4 months!!! Couldn't have been possible without the tremendous hard work of Indraneel Bommisetty who was our 1st developer working on Layar.

As promised I would share some more stories about Layar now that it is almost 15 years ago that we launched the 1st version of the product. A big pivot in 2010/2011 for Layar was to go from only geospatial AR to vision based AR. A technology that required a complete new tech stack. We were able to develop it in 6 months and with this technology we were able to recognize and augment 2D surfaces. In search of our killer usecase we developed Stiktu. A user generated AR app that offered users the possibility to add their digital layer to everyday objects. We made the user also the creator. A product Ronald van der Lingen Olivier Slabbers Maurice Groenhart, Michael Hofmann and others worked hard on. We needed to stop the development of this product as we focused on the "interactive print" use case which had a clearer (B2B) business case. One of the thoughts that still haunts my mind is: what if we would have chosen a B2C route?

In June this year it is 15 years ago that we launched Layar. To celebrate that fact we(the founders) will organize a nice Layar get together on June 23rd but next to that I personally will share these weeks more stories from that amazing time. To kick that off, I am sharing this commercial which was a collaboration of Google Motorola Solutions & Verizon. In it you see how they promoted Layar in the USA. This commercial was aired during the NBA semi-finals. I believe our CTO Dirk Groten, PhD still has nightmares about it.. We went from 2 Amazon Web Services (AWS) instances to over 10 in 30 minutes. Expect more stories soon!!https://lnkd.in/dAaWwt4d#augmentedreality
